A Message from Bridgewater Senior Center Board of Trustees

The Board of Selectmen, annually, are faced with making “hard” decisions regarding the development of the fiscal budget. These are troubling decisions due to the simple fact that the program and department needs far exceed the available funds. This situation is not a new revelation, but has been going on for years. Fiscal year 9 and Fiscal year 10 pose far deeper reductions and possibly, total elimination of programs and services. Those communities with “rainy day” funds will fare better. Bridgewater does not have a “rainy day” fund.

Sure, we can point fingers at each other for the financial crises in Bridgewater. Overrides have failed for a number of reasons, contributing to the present negative financial crises. A number of programs have a strong, political voice, which can “bring out the votes” at town meetings. Senior citizens do not have this voice, and over the years the budgets for the Senior Center have been continually reduced. It is not reasonable to expect the Senior Center to operate with fund raising, donations, volunteers, and limited staffing.

Without the programs provided by the Senior Center, for example, many will be denied the opportunity to socialize, to participate in the Meals on Wheels Program, workshops on computer use and painting, local transportation, emergency heating oil distribution and other essential services. Imagine sitting at home alone, because there are no activities at the Senior Center, or not having a meal, because there are limited volunteers to provide home delivery.

The Senior Citizens deserve the respect of each resident within the Town of Bridgewater. They are entitled to receive those programs that will help them maintain their dignity, and feel that they are recognized as an important and integral part of the Town of Bridgewater. A measure of a successful community is its ability to address the needs of its most vulnerable citizens.

The challenge of the Board of Selectmen is to address the needs of the senior citizens and then determine the appropriate funding. A term, moral outrage, can be reflective of the present condition of our senior citizens, and the manner in which we address the issue, Moral outrage occurs when one sees a significant problem that is having a negative impact on the lives of those who are affected, speaks out and moves to correct the condition.
