GBWOT Raises Domestic Violence Awareness

On Thursday, August 30th Greater Bridgewater Women of Today hosted a dinner at the Fireside Grille in Middleboro in an effort to raise awareness of Domestic Violence. The event was run by GBWOT President Jill Hopkins and Treasurer, Bernadette Reed and was well- attended beginning with a cocktail social hour, followed by dinner and a speaking portion.  Former Executive Director of the Governor’s Commission on Sexual and Domestic Violence, Marilee Kenney Hunt was first to address the crowd, with a definition of “Sexual and Domestic Violence.” Hunt referenced her advocacy of abuse victims in court and pointed out that “1 out of every 4 women is now, or has been a victim of some form of domestic violence.”

Lenira Peters, of Penelope’s Place-a shelter providing support and programs for the Bridgewater community, followed up by dispelling common stereotypes about abuse victims and with a description of the services offered by Penelope’s Place. Both speakers kept the mood light despite the serious subject matter.  Dinner and a question and answer session followed and the winner of a gift card, graciously donated by the Fireside Grille was drawn. Each attendee brought a donation for Penelope’s Place. Donations included numerous gift cards, an umbrella stroller, toiletries, towels, sheets, blankets, pillows, dishes as well as soaps, detergents and hair care products.  Jeff Fowler of Bridgewater Community Access Television was on hand to record the event.

GBWOT would like to thank Marilee Kenney Hunt, Lenira Peters, Jeff Fowler (BTV), The Fireside Grille and all who attended for making the evening a success in helping to raise awareness of domestic violence.  Join GBWOT for their next exciting event, a Zumba Fundraiser on Sunday, September 16th at 11:00 AM at Bridgewater Fitness Center.
