One Book One Community

Bridgewater’s One Book One Community Committee will sponsor an event at the Bridgewater Public Library on Saturday, March 30th. “Sailors’ Arts and Hearts” will take place from 11a.m. to 1p.m. in the library’s Flora T. Little Room on the lower level. Two demonstrations will take place and light refreshments will be served.

Pat Donovan, a retired high school teacher and Bridgewater resident, will demonstrate Nantucket basket-making. He learned to make Nantucket baskets as a hobby.

Mary Rezendes will speak about the history and art of Sailor’s Valentines. Mary has been an admirer and collector of Sailor’s Valentines for fifteen years. She will bring a display of valentines and books on the subject, plus a variety of types of shells which are used in the craft.

In the Heart of the Sea is the current One Book One Community selection. It is a true survival story focused on the ordeal of the Whaleship Essex, which was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale in 1819. The crew drifted for more than ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, disease, and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival. An intense and mesmerizing read, In the Heart of the Sea is a monumental work of history forever placing the Essex tragedy in the American historical canon.
