Message from Bridgewater Police Department


On the morning of May 8th, 2013 at approx 3:30am an individual was arrested  after a 2.5 hour standoff with Bridgewater and Middleboro Police. The standoff was in  the parking lot of 1221 Bedford St. Bridgewater.

The incident originated in Middleboro where the suspect, later identified as Christopher French age 40 of 173 Old Center St. Middleboro, had barricaded himself in his vehicle with a loaded shotgun. The suspect then fled in his vehicle towards Bridgewater. Middleboro and State Police chased the vehicle into Bridgewater.


Bridgewater Police Officers got involved in the chase. The vehicle was subsequently stopped in the parking lot of P&L Paintball, located at 1221 Bedford St. (Rt 18). The suspect had a shotgun in his possession. Officers reported that the suspect placed the shotgun at his head.

A perimeter was created by Bridgewater Police, Middleboro Police, Massachusetts State Police, Bridgewater State University Police, and Massachusetts Department of Correction.


SEMLEC Swat was activated. During the standoff, the suspect continued to place the shotgun to his head. SEMLEC and Massachusetts State Police Negotiators were able to contact the suspect by using his cell-phone . The Negotiators were able to successfully talk the suspect into surrendering to police. The standoff lasted approximately 2.5 hours.


This successful outcome was a direct result of regional cooperation by a multitude of Law Enforcement Agencies.
