The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by Rebecca Skloot

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells, taken without her knowledge in 1951, became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance.

Henrietta’s family will be speaking at Horace Mann Auditorium, October 4, at 11:00am. This event is free and open to the public.

Bridgewater Food Pantry

The Bridgewater Food Pantry, hosted by Central Square Congregational Church, has had an unusually large number of patrons this summer and as a result, the shelves in the pantry are critically low on products.

They could use any and all donations that you could make, including food and money.

The most critical items include tuna fish, soups, baked beans, pasta sauce, pasta, cereal, instant potatoes, fruit juices, soda, rice, canned fruit, baking mixes, crackers, paper towels and toilet paper.

Several people have run "neighborhood food drives" in the past and had good success. Please consider doing this if you have the time and energy!

Donations can be dropped off at the church, at 71 Central Square (right on the common, next to College Town Siding & Glass) M-F, 9am-12noon, and Sundays 9am-11:30am, just inside the side door.

Thank you,

Jack Melcher

Sublime Sunflowers: How to Pastel Paint Like the Masters

The Bridgewater Public Library will host award-winning pastel Gregory John Maichack’s all new workshop: “Sublime Sunflowers: How to Pastel Paint Like the Masters,” on Tuesday, Sept. 9th from 6-8p.m. This workshop serves beginners to advanced adult artists and is free and open to the public. Seats may fill quickly, so please call 508-697-3331 to pre-register.

In this fun pastel painting workshop for adults (age 16 and up), Mr. Maichack will provide insights into the lives of the old masters who painted the sunflower: Vincent Van Gogh, Monet, and Georgia O’Keeffe. A beautifully structured sunflower drawing of one of O’Keeffe’s sunflower paintings will be the jumping off point for participants as they are coached to create their own sunflower pastel painting. The essentials of pastel painting will be demonstrated as participants follow along. Materials will be supplied.

Maichack lives in western Holyoke. He is a portraitist and painter working primarily in pastels and winner of the Award of Merit from the Bennngton Center for the Arts: Impressions of New England Show 2003, and Savoir-faire Pastel Award from the Great Lakes Pastel Society. Maichack, commissioned by Westfield State College, painted the pastel portrait of the past college president, Doctor Frederick Woodward,. He has been in many national juried shows and was awarded hundreds of Massachusetts Cultural Council grants. He is a faculty member at the Museum Studio School in the Fine Arts Museum Quadrangle in Springfield, and also teaches at Greenfield Community College in their adult continuing education department.

This workshop is supported in part from a grant from the Bridgewater Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. The Friends of the Bridgewater Public Library are also contributing towards the program.

For more information or to register for this workshop, call Mary O’Connell at the Bridgewater Public Library, 508-697-3331. Registration is required.

Bridgewater Community Dance Series

The Bridgewater Community Dance Series will be starting its fourth year this coming September, featuring a mix of international folk dance and New England squares and contras. We have a steady group of 20-30 dancers, who not only enjoy the dancing (it’s great exercise!), but also enjoy the opportunity for joyful interaction with others. For 2014/2015, dancers may sign up for an eight session fall series, a twelve session winter/spring series, or both.

No prior experience is required and all dances are taught. Dances are held on alternating Fridays—with some exceptions—from 7:30-9:00 p.m., at the Bridgewater Senior Center. Dates for the fall are September 5 and 19, October 3, 17, and 31, November 7 and 21, and December 12. Dates for the winter/spring series are: January 2, 16, and 30, February 6 and 20, March 6 and 20, April 3 and 17, and May 1, 15, and 29. Session fees, per person, are $48 for the fall, $72 for the winter/spring, or $105 ($15 savings) to sign up for both. Single night attendees will be charged $8 per dance.

Dance leader, Sam Baumgarten, professor emeritus at Bridgewater State University, has over 40 years of teaching experience and continues to teach classes at BSU in folk, square, and contra dance. To obtain a registration form or for more information, contact Sam at 508-697-6848, or 774-208-2933, or

Don’t be afraid to try it out, maybe get out of your comfort zone. You won’t be disappointed!
