Where’s Bridgewater?

“Where’s Bridgewater?” presentation given by David Moore from the Bridgewater Historical Commission at the Bridgewater Public Library on Tuesday, October 9th at 6:30 p.m.

Everybody takes for granted that Bridgewater is located where it is but why. How do you pick a place for a town and once you do how do you plan it out? There are no property bounds set by the Indians or previous settlers. There are no roads to reference. Where do you start? How do you design it? Building a town from scratch is not as easy as playing your favorite video game. Come join us and hear about our town’s history!

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library, is free and open to the public.

The last day to register to vote in the November 6, 2018 State Election is Wednesday, October 17, 2018. You can register to vote online at the Secretary of State's website by clicking here or you can register to vote in the Academy Building at the Town Clerk's office.

Pre-registration is also available both online and in the Town Clerk's office. Though you must be 18 years old in order to vote, you may pre-register to vote once you are 16 years old. You will receive a pre-registration notice by mail, confirming receipt of your application.

Once you become old enough to vote, your local election will mail you an acknowledgement notice, which is confirmation that your name has been moved from the list of pre-registrants to the list of registered voters. Your acknowledgement notice will include your party affiliation and the location of your polling place.

It is important to keep your local election official informed of any changes to your information. You must submit a new voter registration form if you wish to change your name, address, mailing address, or political affiliation.

What the Rule of St. Benedict Teaches Us About Happiness, Meaning and Community by Judith Valente

2nd & 4th Wednesdays

September 12 – December 12

The Rule of St. Benedict arose from an era when a great civilization was threatened by violence, economic forces that favored the wealthy, political leaders that lacked the trust of the public, and rampant xenophobia. Similar to the anxieties and frustrations of the 6th century, we are living in a time where societies need to stress community over competition, consensus over conflict, simplicity over self-gain, and silence over the constant chatter and distractions of our lives.

The Swedenborgian theology of the Bridgewater New Jerusalem Church honors the good and truth in all traditions and encourages inquiry as a spiritual path to deepening faith.

A is for Amendment Presentation

A presentation titled “A is for Amendment” will be given by Historian and Professor Dr. Gary Hylander, PhD at the Bridgewater Public Library on Tuesday, September 11th at 6:30 p.m.

Join us as we discuss the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments commonly referred to as the Civil War Amendments. With the outbreak of the Civil War in April 1861, Lincoln’s armies marched into the Confederacy to crush secession and restore the Union. Over time however, the objectives of the War broadened to include emancipation and citizenship for all former slaves and the right to vote for black males only. Special attention will be given to the 14th Amendment as this year marks the 150th anniversary of its ratification.

Dr. Gary Hylander, PhD is currently an independent scholar who specializes as a presidential historian, a pedagogical specialist for the National Endowment for the Humanities and professor of history.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library, is free and open to the public.
