The Bridgewater Democratic Town Committee Memorial Scholarship application is now available.

The Bridgewater DTC Memorial Scholarship this year will be for $500.00 and will be awarded to a Bridgewater student graduating from high school and looking to further their education. The scholarship application consists of a short essay and some background questions.

A Message of Solidarity: Social and Educational Gathering Dedicated to the victims of Sri Lanka Churches and hotels!

Students, faculty, librarians, staff and the residents of the Bridgewater community are invited to attend a social gathering on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 1:00pm-2:00pm in the BSU Rondileau Campus Center Small Ballroom to show solidarity and to offer condolences and support for the Sri Lanka Christian Community and the people of Sri Lanka. 

Organized by MIGE Global Programs, Center for Middle East Studies & Global Religious Studies. 

Old Bridgewater Historical Society






On Wednesday, May 8th, Dr. Ian Saxine will present a lecture at the Old Bridgewater Historical Society, located at 162 Howard Street, West Bridgewater. The subject of his presentation is: Bad Deeds? Debating Indian Land Sales in Colonial Maine. The program begins at 7:00 p.m.

This presentation examines the extended struggle to re-litigate and define the meaning of early land sales on the Maine coast between the Indians and early colonists. It argues that Indians played a central role in driving colonial ideas about land use and title.

Presented by Dr. Ian Saxine, a visiting assistant professor at Bridgewater State University and current coordinator of the Maine Historical Society’s Historians’ Forum, Dr. Saxine received his PhD at Northwestern University in 2016. In his new book “Properties of Empire: Indians, Colonists, and Land Speculators on the New England Frontier” (NYU Press, April 2019), he explores how diverse early Americans understood land ownership and how that shaped the course of empire in New England.

#Operation Unification at BSU

#Operation Unification, hosted by Bridgewater State University’s School of Social Work, will be held on Thursday, April 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the atrium of the Dana Mohler-Faria Science and Mathematics Center, 24 Park Ave.

Students from Community and Organization, an undergraduate social work class, have partnered with Strategies for Youth to organize #Operation Unification – an event designed to raise awareness and engage the community in bridging understanding and respect between youth and police officers.

18th Century Gravestones and Their Carvers in the Bridgewaters

On Sunday, April 14th, Vincent Luti will be at the Old Bridgewater Historical Society to lecture about “18th Century Gravestones and Their Carvers in the Bridgewaters”. The program begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial Building, located at 162 Howard Street, West Bridgewater.

The Bridgewaters are a crossroad of 18th century gravestone carvers’ work. To the east, Plymouth County carvers and to the west, Bristol County carvers who took over from Newport carvers. During Professor Luti’s presentation, the audience will learn about the Bridgewater gravestone carver, Barney Leonard, and John & James New, Cephas Thompson, Nathan Hayward, and others whose work is found in the cemeteries of the Bridgewaters.

Vincent Luti is a Professor Emeritus at UMass Dartmouth, and author of the works “Mallet & Chisel”, “In Death Remember’d” and numerous published articles on the 18th century gravestone carvers of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Over the years, he has photographed more than 7000 gravestones in six northeastern states.

“18th Century Gravestones and Their Carvers in the Bridgewaters: A Treasury of Early American Folk Art in Stone”, is sponsored by the Old Bridgewater Historical Society, whose mission is to promote education and research relating to the original township of Bridgewater, its inhabitants, and its history by collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting materials, artifacts, and information pertaining to “Old Bridgewater”. Deadline to Register to Vote for the April 27th Annual Town Election

Bridgewater Town Clerk’s Office reminds residents that Monday, April 8, 2019 is the deadline to register to vote for the upcoming Annual Town Election to be held on April 27th.

The Voter Registration Session will be held at the Town Clerk's Office, Academy Building, 66 Central Square and will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 8th.

Persons who are United States Citizens, residents of Bridgewater, and who will be at least 18 years old on or before April 27th are eligible to register. Those meeting these qualifications who have a Massachusetts Driver’s License can submit their registration online at www.RegisterToVoteMA.com.

The Bridgewater Public Library will feature an exhibit of a variety of works in different mediums by the Bridgewater Senior Painters in the Flora T. Little Art Gallery during the months of April and May.

Old Bridgewater HIstorical Society Meeting

The Old Bridgewater Historical Society will hold its annual 2019 members’ meeting and election of board members on Sunday, April 28 th at 2:00 p.m. The Society’s financial documents will be reviewed and refreshments will be served. Come early for a chance to meet the candidates.

Summer Science Academy at BSU

The Center for Advancement of STEM Education (CASE) is offering a four-day Summer Science Academy to area students entering grades 4-12. Courses will be held at the Dana Mohler-Faria Science and Mathematics Center (24 Park Ave.) and other locations, including outdoors.

I speak for the Trees will run from July 8-12, 2019 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 1:30- 4:30 p.m., and is a program for students entering grades 4 and 5. In this program, students will examine climate change and create an outreach pamphlet that not only explains their research but suggests changes that everyone can make to better planet Earth. Registration deadline is June 25, 2019.

Forensics Institute of Bridgewater will run from July 8-12, 2019 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., and is for students entering grades 6 through 8. In this program, students will work as crime scene analysts to solve a “case.” Students will gather evidence from a simulated crime scene and learn how to collect and analyze fingerprints, perform blood type analysis, and use DNA fingerprinting. Registration deadline is June 25, 2019.

Shipwrecked: Exploring the STEM of Maritime Archaeology will run from July 15-19, 2019 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., and is for students entering grades 6 through 8. In this program, students will learn how scientists explore, study, and map shipwrecks and other artifacts by applying concepts, methods, and technology used in the field. Registration deadline is July 2, 2019.

A Whale of a Mystery will run from July 22-26, 2019 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., and is for students entering grades 6 through 8. In this program, students will work in groups to solve a mystery related to the hunting of an endangered whale species. Students will learn about the natural history of whales and conduct laboratory research using state of the art technology and techniques used in the field. Registration deadline is July 9, 2019.

Cancer in Context will run from July 15-19, 2019 from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and is for students entering grades 9 through 12. In this program, students will explore the many questions related to cancer and perform experiments such as microscopy, gene microarray, and gel electrophoresis. Registration deadline is July 2, 2019.

Biotech Career Rotation: Biotech, Health and the Environment will run from July 22-26, 2019 from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and is for students entering grades 9 through 12. In this program, previously titled Biotech II, students will explore how biotechnology impacts our lives across a range of disciplines related to health and the environment. Registration deadline is July 9, 2019.
