Old Bridgewater Historical Society

On Wednesday, May 8th, Dr. Ian Saxine will present a lecture at the Old Bridgewater Historical Society, located at 162 Howard Street, West Bridgewater. The subject of his presentation is: Bad Deeds? Debating Indian Land Sales in Colonial Maine. The program begins at 7:00 p.m.

This presentation examines the extended struggle to re-litigate and define the meaning of early land sales on the Maine coast between the Indians and early colonists. It argues that Indians played a central role in driving colonial ideas about land use and title.

Presented by Dr. Ian Saxine, a visiting assistant professor at Bridgewater State University and current coordinator of the Maine Historical Society’s Historians’ Forum, Dr. Saxine received his PhD at Northwestern University in 2016. In his new book “Properties of Empire: Indians, Colonists, and Land Speculators on the New England Frontier” (NYU Press, April 2019), he explores how diverse early Americans understood land ownership and how that shaped the course of empire in New England.

This program is free and open to the public; Donations gratefully accepted.
