New Exhibit in the Flora T. Little Art Gallery: Visual Conversations

On display during the months of August and September.

Is it possible to have a conversation without words? Seven photographers, Deb Ehrens, Lisa Redburn, Paula Laverty, Jean Schnell, Estelle Disch, Diane Collins and Karla Bernstein were going to find out.

This exhibit explores communication via the exchange of images rather than words. The conversation was initiated by one photographer sending an image to a second photographer, who “responded” by sending one of her images to the next, and so on. When they received an image, they had no context or knowledge of the previous images. As soon as they finished one round of the circle, they began another round, but changed places in the circle. A conversation was “complete” once each had the opportunity to respond to each of the others (seven intersecting circles). Individually, it was inspiring and challenging! Did they want to do something similar or change the conversation? What was most significant about what they were seeing? Did they respond to the subject, the color palette, a shape, the quality of light, a ripple on the water, a feeling? Would an image convey an emotional response? Should they create a new image or search files for a good fit?

The work exhibited presents one complete conversation and short runs from other conversations. As a viewer, what do you see? Do you understand their responses? What surprises you? Gather some friends and try your own visual conversation!

Meet and Greet the Artists in the Flora T. Little Gallery on Tuesday, September 10th from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm.
