The Library Book Author To Present At One Book Event

Author Susan Orlean reopens the unsolved mystery of the most catastrophic library fire in American history in her novel The Library Book, the One Book One Community selection in Bridgewater this fall.

The author will present a talk on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Bridgewater State University’s Horace Mann Auditorium in Boyden Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. The fire reached 2000 degrees as it raged through the stacks and burned for more than seven hours – becoming the largest library fire in the history of the U.S. It destroyed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more and shut down the library for seven years.

In her book, Orlean pays homage to a beloved institution, our libraries, while delving into the Los Angeles fire, which remains a mystery today.

The One Book One Community program has brought local residents and the university community together for more than a dozen years to read and discuss a single book. The program, which began in the 2005-2006 academic year, featured Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich.
